Get Out of My Way! By Dr. Michael Brooks

Get Out of My Way! By Dr. Michael Brooks

Have you ever had someone cut in line in front of you, while grocery shopping or waiting to order at a fast-food restaurant? What was your reaction? Did you get angry, did you say something and let them know you were not happy? I’m sure most of us would not be overjoyed if that happened to us. It has happened to me plenty of times, and although I usually do not say anything, I watch the people and see how they react to the individual who cut in line in front of them.

It’s not worth it to get angry if someone cuts in line, keep your cool and just move on!

I learned a valuable lesson several years ago about some of the reasons why people do this. Most people who do cut in line are insensitive and don’t care who has been waiting patiently for their turn to be next.

I’ve had people cut in line when I was waiting to buy gas, or I was about to take a parking space that I’ve been waiting for, someone zips right in and takes my spot. They get out of their car, look at me with a big smile, and walk away. Yes, we’ve all been there, haven’t we?

Everyone seems in a rush these days, so much going on in the world, work, school, sports, social events, all kinds of busy activities. The event that changed my mind as to why some people are in a hurry and cut in line happened while I was waiting to get on an elevator at a hospital in Denver. I was there going to visit a friend of mine. I just got on the elevator and stepped to the side, when suddenly I heard a woman yelling “Get Out of My Way.” I was by the elevator panel for each floor, she pushed me aside and started hitting the 4th-floor several times. She was having a  hard time breathing; I’m guessing she had been running with her husband to a family emergency at the hospital. Then she spoke to her husband and said, “I hope we made it in time.” The elevator doors opened up to the 4th floor, as she ran out I could see it was the ICU floor. As the doors closed, I said a silent prayer for this woman and her husband. I visited with my friend and then headed home, doing a lot of thinking.

Here’s what I learned from my experience at the hospital. Some people really do have a reason to be in a hurry. They may cut in line, they might take our parking spot, some may even seem rude, but ask yourself this question, what is it that they are going through? Is this person experiencing a crisis? Is a family member ill, maybe they are having a bad day with a spouse threatening divorce, no matter what they may be going through, step back, and give someone the benefit of the doubt.

In closing, keep in mind that no matter what the situation is, it’s not worth confronting and getting angry over someone cutting in line, just keep the peace, go on with life, and be happy that you’re not getting upset with someone who may have a good reason to cut in line. Move on and be happy!

Winning Combination For a Great marriage (1) By Dr. Michael Brooks

Winning Combination For a Great marriage (1) By Dr. Michael Brooks

Have you ever watched a couple that had a wonderful marriage, then thought about yours? They hold hands when walking; they laugh and smile when they’re together. Their marriage seems so inspiring, and you think, I’d like a marriage like that too!

I have seen these marriages and observed what their secret is. I watched many of these couples over the years while growing up. My dad was in the military, and I saw my parents having a so, so marriage. As a kid living on army bases, I saw several military couples happy with each other and their kids. Life seemed so stress-free, and if I was lucky, they always included me as if I was one of their own. I wasn’t even their kid, but I felt that I was a part of their family in a weird way.

Good communication with your partner is key for a healthy relationship

As a kid, I grew up in a very dysfunctional home. My parents were never there for me or my brothers or sister. They were both heavy drinkers, and my dad could be pretty harsh when we got punished with a belt. Nowadays, it would be considered physical abuse, I’m sure.

The only time our family spent time together was around the dinner table. We talked openly and respectful of each other. I have only seen my parents argue once with each other, and I have to say, it scared me listening to them. There was little communication that I ever saw between them.

As a kid, some of the things I noticed with several of these couples was that they spent a lot of time together. This one particular couple I knew and liked, would go on walks together, so they would go to the park and enjoy spending time on nature trails. Note to self, If your spouse likes to do certain activities, then, by all means, make it happen. If they like concerts, surprise them with tickets. If they like sporting events, plan a day at their favorite team’s park or stadium. Planning a special event or day really shows that you love your spouse.

I love it when I see couples engaged in deep conversation, they are looking at each other, paying attention to what they are saying to each other. Meaningful talks really help a relationship grow. I suggest that you talk about things that matter to you. For example, talk about your plans as a married couple, what does the next year, 3-year and 5-year plan look like to both of you? You should talk about your investments, planned vacations, who needs your help and who you’d like to volunteer your time with? Open communication is so healthy for a growing and vibrant relationship.

Next week’s article will have some great suggestions that you may want to try to build a stronger marriage through better communication.

Do you feel frustrated about your marriage and want to reconnect at a deeper level? Do you want help in restoring your marriage and the tools to make that happen? Do you need help in how to communicate with your spouse? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to contact Dr. Mike and set up an appointment. Please call Dr. Mike at 303.880.9878. I’m So Lonely, I could Die, Thanks COVID-19! (2) By Dr. Michael Brooks

I’m So Lonely, I could Die, Thanks COVID-19! (2) By Dr. MIchael Brooks

This week we will continue with how to keep busy during the COVID-19 pandemic, I have some thoughts on reaching out to your family and others who may need to hear from you. Be the voice of reason many need to hear at this time!

I’ve used this time to make phone calls to people that I haven’t spoken to in a while, I just want to check in on them to see how they’re doing. I’ve made phone calls to those who may need help in getting groceries or running errands. I’ve texted many just to let them know that I am thinking about them. Many people are responding because they are lonely as well and need to talk to someone. So, our texting turns into uplifting conversations with each other. Many want to reach out but are uncomfortable in doing so, so when you text them, they usually welcome hearing from a friend. That’s why we need to check in on these folks. Be supportive, be available, and be a good listener.

Somethings that I like to do, is using my camera and getting out and taking wildlife pictures on my property. It’s amazing the pictures of birds I have in my neighborhood. I also like editing my pictures as well. There is so much to do, I will give you my list for keeping busy during these trying times.

  • Photography, wildlife, landscapes, people, cities, towns, and country
  • Writing journals, books, poetry, newspaper articles, blogs
  • Researching your family tree, myhertiage.com, ancestry.com
  • Learning new healthy recipes, teaching kids to cook, cook with your spouse
  • Getting home projects done, cleaning rooms out organizing the garage, painting rooms, hanging pictures, washing your windows, trimming trees, planning your garden, ordering your plants, trees, and shrubs.
  • Start working out, do yoga, learn new stretching programs, ride your bike, enjoy walking.
  • Play board games, cards, puzzles, kids games
  • Listen to music as you read, or take a bubble bath

I’m sure you can add to this list. If your spouse or kids suggest some idea’s give them a try. Just don’t sit around and watch depressing news. Get active mentally, and physically. If you think about it, there really is a lot of things you can do to keep busy.

We’re all going to get through this COVID-19, we really are going to be fine. Just follow the suggestions that the CDC is telling us. There is no reason to take any chances.

I had a friend call me yesterday and she is terrified of COVID-19. I asked her have you been watching the news for any length of time and she said that she was. I asked her to turn off the television and listen to the music that she liked. I also suggested that she stay away from reading news about COVID-19 on social media. If you’re doing things that put you at risk, then, of course, I’d be worried. When people just have to go out to Walmart to see if it’s crowded and walk around, that puts you and your family at risk. My suggestion is to stay home, spend time with the family, if you live alone, look at some of my suggestions and try them.

There is no reason to be bored during this time, do the things that can help people. Yesterday, I decided that I would assemble the firepit I got at Home Depot. This was an easy project, so I loaded up some wood and had a fire going and listened to some of my favorite music. I really enjoyed sitting by the fire while living in the mountains. The little things like this create some great memories for a book project that I am thinking of doing.

In closing, reach out to those who are lonely, those who are disabled, or someone you know that just needs to hear from you. These acts of kindness can go a long way.

I’d love to hear what you’ve been doing to occupy yourselves during this time, send me an email and share your story, send to: mbrooks3353@gmail.com

Is COVID-19 scaring you and you need someone to talk to? Would you like to build a stronger family through healthy conversations during the COVID-19 and don’t know how? Do you and your spouse want help in knowing how to help your family grow closer during these difficult days? Do you need help in planning activities for your family during the COVID-19 crisis? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to contact Dr. Mike and set up an appointment. Please call Dr. Mike at 303.880.9878. If you need to talk.

I’m So Lonely, I could Die, Thanks COVID-19! (1) By Dr. Michael Brooks

I’m So Lonely, I could Die, Thanks COVID-19! (1) By Dr. Michael Brooks

Yep, we heard the news correctly, another three weeks in a lock-down, or self-confinement. I know some of you are going crazy being at home for the last two weeks. You can only watch so much television or read so many books. Let’s face it, we are in a pandemic and for many of us we have no clue on how to manage our downtime. For many, just sitting in a chair and wondering what’s going to happen the next several weeks is not a good place to be.

Fear is taking over many in this pandemic!

If you’re Worrying about tomorrow it will rob you of today’s peace. If you’re glued to the television watching the news, you need to stop doing that and start being productive for you and your family. The news seems to be causing panic and fear with each and every broadcast. Maybe it’s time to start planning some work projects and fun things to do for you and the family.

OK, so what kinds of things are you talking about Dr. Mike? If you live by yourself, start doing things you have dreamed about doing but didn’t have time for it. You certainly have time to do it now, if you’re in a lock-down situation. Maybe you’ve wanted to take up writing poetry, or writing a book. If you do, research on how to begin putting together an outline on google. This actually could be a great project for you. Research that and see what you can come up with. If you like learning about your family history, then do some research with Ancestry.com or MyHeritage.com. There are so many things that you can do. If you have projects around the home that need attending to, then, by all means, get a pad of paper and walk around the house and make a list of to “Do” things, and have at it. Maybe you want to start a diet plan with a bit of exercise. Don’t sit around the house and get depressed. You can do yoga classes online, you can go for walks with your family. There is so much to do while confined to your home or neighborhood.

Next week we will continue with this article, I’m So Lonely, I could Die, you’ll get some insights and suggestions for keeping busy with the family and not focused on the news and all the negativity that goes with it. We’ll get through this, all of us will. Count on it!

How Do I Stay Physically Fit During the COVID-19 Pandemic?

How Do I Stay Physically Fit During the COVID-19 Pandemic?

You may ask yourself, how can I and my family stay fit during this COVO-19 Pandemic while locked down at home? I have some suggestions that you may want to try. They’re not difficult and can be done in your own home or at a park with a sidewalk or street sidewalk. I believe that being physically active will help you to feel in control of your health and give you a calmness that exercise often gives when you do it. You can walk, ride a stationary bike at home, do stretches, yoga to music. There is no reason you can’t enjoy a workout in your own home.

Walking can give you the peace you need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Take control of your health by exercise and feeling better by walking.

I love walking, and you don’t need a gym to walk outside when the weather is good. I suggest that if at all possible that you get a physical if you haven’t had one in a while. I know with all the COVID-19 issues going around it may be difficult to get in to see your doctor. If you can schedule your appointment with a PA-Physician’s Assistant, and if they give you the green light to exercise, then you’re good to go. You just want to make sure that you don’t have any underlying medical concerns.
Find a safe place that you can start your walking program (A park with sidewalks, or street with sidewalks) a country road, even a hiking trail. If you are new to this, take your time and start with 30 minutes of walking daily or at least four days for one week. Then add 5 minutes to each week that you will be walking until you reach 60 minutes. When you hit that mark, then start doing it for speed, step up your pace. Walking is the easiest exercise there is. Walking gives you a calmness and peacefulness that many would love to have. When you walk, enjoy your surroundings, the trees, birds, country, city, people watching, it’s all good. The smells you will encounter, the new buds on trees, fresh flowers, the fresh rain on the grass. The sounds of birds, the wind in the trees. There is so much to see when you do a walk. You can also listen to your favorite music while on the move.

I believe that exercising during this time will give you a feeling of being in control of your health and well-being. Follow the 6-foot distancing from people that the CDC- (Centers for Disease Control) recommends if walking with a group of people. Be careful, put you and your family first. If you have any questions about putting together a walking program, contact Dr. Mike at 303.880.9878 (MST)

Yoga in the confines of your own home
While some of the aforementioned apps also feature Yoga routines, the folks behind the Down Dog Yoga app are taking it one step further for kids and educators.
