Beware of The Rattlesnakes in Your Life (1) By Dr. Michael Brooks

Beware of the Rattlesnakes in your life! (1)

By Dr. Michael Brooks

I was at a marriage conference in Colorado Springs last weekend when I noticed a sign by the hotel entrance that said, “Beware of Rattlesnakes.” I looked around the area, and I could see where rattlesnakes could be a potential problem. Rattlesnakes had the perfect habitat; there was sandy soil, lots of places where the snakes could hide, and lots of sun. I have had a few close encounters with rattlesnakes, and honestly, they scared the daylights out of me! Out of nowhere, while walking a hiking trail, I heard the rattle of the rattlesnake that gave me the warning to stay clear, which I did.

Some people are like rattlesnakes too. A rattlesnake from a distance can cause alarm, but you’ll be on your guard. Whereas a rattlesnake hidden in the weeds or around the corner when you’re walking, can strike at you without any warning. Those are the snakes that we must be aware of in our lives, the hidden ones. The ones that catch us off guard, the ones that strike without warning. These are the people I want to warn you about.

Some people can fool you when you least expect it. I can remember hearing guys at work slam our boss (Frank), granted he was hard to get along with at times. I would watch these guys set him up and tease him about the clothes he’d wear. They’d make fun of his shoes, shirts, pants, whatever they could embarrass him about. They’d tease him about not having a car, because he walked to work. I never thought it was funny, only hurtful. Frank wasn’t overly complex; he was simple in many ways. I liked that about him, as I felt he was extremely easy to get along with. Why these other guys felt that he was a target of their attacks was beyond me. I was a teenager when working for this company, it was a summer job. Most kids in high school would simply avoid getting entangled with adults being mean to someone at work. I was pretty shy when I was in High School.

Frank would seek me out when we had a lunch break. I liked to listen to him talk about his wife and kids, he was proud of his family. He didn’t really care what the others would say about him, I just knew that they were the rattlesnakes in his life, and they liked spreading their poison. That left a lasting impression about the people I needed to avoid in life. If I hear someone gossiping, I will confront them. Gossip has destroyed friendships, businesses, families. I call this one of the main venoms we all deal with, each and every day.

Next week, we will continue with the rattlesnakes in your life and relationships. Learn how to deal with these volatile people you encounter in your families, friendships, and work.

Unexplained Behaviors Explained (17)

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (17)

By Dr. Michael Brooks

This week, we will discover how yellows operate and how much fun they can be to the rest of the colors in the colorcode. Yellows love fun, that’s their motto!

Yellows like to have a lot of fun and enjoy their life no matter what they are doing. Simply put yellows know how to have fun. They are always looking forward to what tomorrow brings. Yellows are notorious for their spontaneous ways. When I get the hankering to do something fun and at the spur of the moment, I’ll call a friend at 6:30 on a Saturday morning and ask if they want to moment and go with me to my favorite donut shop. I usually get the answer “Yes” and we will meet in a parking lot or I pick them up and we head down to the donut shop. I will share my day and ask about theirs and it ends up be a great time spent together. We laugh and enjoy the morning together. Let’s face it, yellows are good to have in your life.

Now yellows do have their weaknesses, and we need to look at those. Yellows have little regards to your boundaries and theirs as well. They can be messy and disorganized with their homes. Their personal appearance is neat and clean. Yellows are self-centered individuals. Many times, they look at the big issues facing them and will find some excuse not to address whatever the problem is, they are easily distracted and find something else to focus on.

Yellows are wanting to experience all that life has to offer, and trust me they will find it. Yellows have great attitudes towards new ideas, change, relationships, jobs, and their future. Yellows look for the good in people and look past the faults in others. When you get into a discussion with a yellow they can share what’s on their hearts with honesty and compassion. Yellows bring optimistic hope to those who are struggling with life, a yellow will make you laugh, giggle, and enjoy life. That’s in their nature!

Here are some yellow strengths: highly optimistic, loves to volunteer, sees life as an experience, adventurous and daring, thinks quickly on their feet, easy to talk to, comfortable with people, able to express self, loves conversation, very flexible, people oriented, high energy, inspires people, highly entertaining, turns crisis into comedy. These are just a few of the positive traits for a yellow.

In closing, yellow personalities are much needed in today’s world. People need yellows to encourage them to be optimistic, forward-thinking, and to enjoy life to the fullest.

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (16)

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (16)

By Dr. Michael Brooks

This week, we will discover how yellows operate and how much fun they can be to the rest of the colors in the colorcode. Yellows love fun, that’s their motto!

The one part of the yellows that I didn’t agree with, and this is me as a yellow saying this, I’m sure there are many yellows who would fit in this category, is they can be self-centered and don’t commit to very much. Yellows like to focus on their needs, wants, and desires. It’s all about them. For yellows, committing to something means being focused for a certain amount of time, and yellows find that hard to do. They can be thinking of other things to do, they can’t focus for long periods of time. They can lose interest rather quickly before committing to a project.

Yellows are naïve and trusting, I have to say as a yellow, I’ve been burned by people that I have trusted. We can be so naïve that we get taken advantage of, and trust people do that to yellows without the yellow realizing it. We make commitments without thinking of the consequences or without thinking it through. We are so happy to trust people that we get caught in our own naivety and get burned in the process. We can hide our hurt feelings by our joking around and our quick smiles and laughter. We don’t show our emotional hurts very easily.

I’ve never sought to be a popular person growing up, it never dawned or interested me. I just wanted to mind my own business and get on with life. When growing up, I could pretty much relate to all ages, and I still do. I had this uncanny knack for being able to express my feelings and see others who needed to be heard. Yellows like to engage with all kinds of people. People like being around yellows because they make people feel important, and they genuinely do. Yellows have many friends and don’t like controlling their friends. Many people want yellows as their friend, yellows are not demanding like the other colors in the colorcode. They are pretty much laid back.

The one thing I like about yellows is that their so optimistic. They wake up ready to start the day and enjoy those around them. They know that things will work out no matter had bad the situation is. I had a good friend of mine who was a yellow. His wife served him with divorce papers, his initial reaction was shock of course. He wanted to save the marriage, and he tried, but alas, it was over with and not to be. He said life goes on, and he worked on becoming a better person, he met a wonderful woman and married her, he is now as happy as I have ever seen him. He landed on his feet and made a good life for himself and his wife. I have to say throughout his divorce he remained in great spirits and laughed a lot.

Next week, we will continue to discover how yellows add spice to all the colorcode personalities. Are you learning anything about yellows and how to enjoy them as friends or a spouse?

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (15)

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (15)

By Dr. Michael Brooks

This week, we will discover how yellows operate and how much fun they can be to the rest of the colors in the colorcode.

Yellows are happy people because we love life. We look at the bright side of life. Most yellows wake up happy and ready for the day. I was doing a zoom class on the colorcode, when we were talking about the yellows, someone asked me a question. Mike, when you wake up are you really happy? People that know me can answer that question with a resounding yes. I love waking up, the minute my feet hit the floor, I am up and ready for the day. I get excited about the day ahead of me. I look forward to meeting people and talking with them. I love my job and how helping others brings me joy. So, yes, a healthy yellow is pretty much happy all the time. Yellows appreciate what they have in their lives and don’t care what they don’t have.

The one area you can recognize a yellow is what we are; we’re chatter boxes; we love to talk about anything and everything. We enjoy sharing our stories with others. We can strike a conversation with anyone, anywhere at any given moment. We find almost everything interesting and will want to talk about it. We are curious people and like to hear people’s stories, where they have been, exciting adventures people have taken. While yes, we are chatter boxes, we get distracted pretty easily. When you want to get a serious conversation with a yellow, it’s hard for yellows to do that; yellows don’t generally want to, can’t, or won’t. Yellows are known for interrupting others in conversations or when others are busy doing something.

Yellows can be irresponsible at times; this is the negative side of the yellows. I questioned that, as a yellow, I had to sit back and do a self-evaluation, was I really irresponsible? I guess a few times I have been, and one such time I recall when I was. My dad owned a new home construction company and real estate office to sell these new homes he built. I was a junior in high school when he wanted me to work for him during the summer. I was excited at first, and the job I had to do was hard labor. I carried shingles, bags of cement, ladders, tools, whatever his older guys needed. After all, I was the teenage mule for his construction crew. After about three weeks of working for him, I heard about a church camp that I really wanted to attend. My buddies were telling me how exciting this was, food, girls, sports, games. I told my buddies I was in and planned to go. Instead of heading to work that Friday morning, I was packed and headed to the sand dunes in Indiana without telling a soul. I never told my dad or the foreman in my dad’s company; I just went and had a good time. My dad was not pleased whatsoever with me, in fact he was terribly upset, and he fired me. So, looking back, yep, I was irresponsible. As an adult, I’d have to say, no, I follow through with what I tell people that I’m going to do. I know of other yellows as adults who are extremely irresponsible (that is an unhealthy yellow).

Some unhealthy yellows feel that it’s someone else’s responsibility to take care of them, it doesn’t matter who, as long as someone else does it. The interesting thought behind this is that yellows are so fun to be around and engaging that people cannot see their limitations. Yellows will try to sprint to the finish line with a task or responsibility and rarely make it to the finish line. They get distracted by wanting to have fun in life. Yellows don’t like the pressure of responsibilities. One of the many reasons they get sidetracked. We love adventure!

Next week, we will continue to discover how yellows add spice to all the colorcode personalities.

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (14)

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (14)

By Dr. Michael Brooks

Today, we will look at the last color in the colorcode, and that is the color yellow. I’ll start right off the bat and tell you that yellow is my primary color. When I took the colorcode test, and discovered that I was yellow after reading the natural strengths and limitations. I was looking at my profile and totally agreed with the results until I saw a few limitations that I disagreed with. As with every color in the colorcode, there will be some of the limitations that you will not agree with.

My results were pretty much spot on. I am speaking from a yellow profile perspective. I’ve had people ask me are yellows really outgoing and energetic. For the most part, yes, we are. We simply like to have fun and enjoy being around other people. We like to see others having fun and be a part of the activities we promote.

My kids will tell you that when we go to the store or to some event where there are people, OK, dad will start talking with people he doesn’t even know, and he makes a new friend in the process. My dad will learn about their families, jobs, events they have been to, even their sad stories. My kids will often make bets on how many people I will talk to. I think this is one of my greatest gifts is to make people feel welcome and appreciated.

When growing up, I was a really shy kid. I never mingled with people; I stayed to myself and did the things that made me happy. I had a rough childhood, and also being an army brat was hard, our family moved all over the US and Europe. I hardly saw my parents in the evening; they were attending base events or at parties off base. My parents were very sociable and enjoyed entertaining friends as well. I believe my dad had a yellow personality too. He was a well-liked officer by his men, family, and friends.

So, let’s look at the yellow personality and see if any of you can identify either as a yellow or know someone who is a yellow. Yellows are known as the fun lovers, we love having fun, we love to tease, tell jokes, and being around people. Fun to us yellows means enjoying someone or something just simply for the sake of enjoyment. People like being around us yellows, we bring life to all people, we encourage and love people just as they are.

Next week we will continue with discovering what yellows are all about and how much fun they can be!

I have used the colorcode when dealing with my clients and their needs. If you want a better marriage, the colorcode will open doors to better communication.

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (13)

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (13)

By Dr. Michael Brooks

We are wrapping up this week’s article on the colorcode white personality, and next week start on the yellows, the personality color of fun! They are one of the most exciting colors in the colorcode.

Whites hate confrontation; they are the peacemakers in the colorcode personality. My daughter will shut down when she is uncomfortable in certain situations. It seems like she is giving the silent treatment, but this is her way of coping with a potential confrontation. I do the same thing too. She will not openly share what she is feeling; she feels deep with her heart and mind, it’s just hard for her to share those feelings with people. I have to talk with her to get her to open up about how she feels.

One thing that drives the other colorcode personalities wild is that whites appear to be unmotivated, lazy, no drive. They seem to lack direction and commitment. Motivation requires goals, how to make these goals happen, next steps. For the whites, this is very difficult. Goals need your passion and a desire to make things happen, and whites fail miserably in this area. When a white finds something that they like to do, more often than not, whites will lose interest in it after several weeks.

In many ways, whites are like yellows, they are very accepting of all the colors, they try to find good in everyone they meet. People like being with whites because they are not judgemental and bring a healthy balance to a relationship. They want peace, and who doesn’t? They don’t seek out people to argue with and will bring peace and harmony to a relationship. Whites prefer to be alone and enjoy their alone time. Some folks think they are boring, and they can be at times, but they enjoy it when someone interacts with them and creates some excitement.

I had one client who was afraid to show his feelings or reveal how he felt. He was very protective of sharing his emotions. He avoided most conversations when people shared or spoke of how they felt about relationships. He would find an excuse to leave and go sit alone on a couch. That is a typical response of a white when avoiding uncomfortable situations. One of the reasons they do this is to prevent any confrontations on how they feel and don’t want to be asked any questions. Keep in mind that white personalities go through life as easy as they can; sometimes, you never know they are there. They are always in the background observing and listening.

What are the limitations of the white colorcode personality? That’s a great question, so what are their limitations? Well, let’s begin by saying they appear to be detached and uninvolved. Simply put, they seem uninterested and unwilling to set goals. They are not crazy about involvement because they fear that there will be confrontation or rejection. So what do they do? They hide in the background and watch.

Now the white strengths are amazing. They get along with every personality in the colorcode; we should learn from them as they contribute so much to all walks of life. They are gentle, kind, the VOR’s in our lives (Voice Of Reason). We need them to bring balance to our chaotic and hectic lives.

Hopefully, this has been an enlightening article for you, and you learn how to communicate with all the colors in the colorcode. Next week, we will learn about the yellows. They can be a blast, fun to hang around with, and be endearing.

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (12)

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (12)

By Dr. Michael Brooks

We will continue this week’s article on the whites in the colorcode, the peacemakers in your life.

My one friend, who is a white, doesn’t show much emotion; he holds his feelings in and guarded. You really never know what he is thinking. He doesn’t trust very many people. My wife is a white, and I will ask her what she is feeling, as whites are very quiet and keep to themselves. I’ve learned over the years that it’s best to let them speak when they are ready and she is fine with that, and since my secondary color is white, I totally get that!

I think out of all the colors in the colorcode; whites are the kindest people, they love people, animals, and good memories. They see no value in seeing people mistreated. If they see that happening and you are unkind to a white, you will probably lose them as a friend. They will not respect the person who is being unkind. One of Dr. Hartman’s examples in his book is about the four colors and how they respond to Dr. Hartman calling out someone talking in his seminar; of course, this is done for the audience to see how reds, blues, yellows, and whites react. Which one are you? Let’s see how you would respond. When speaking to large audiences, Dr. Hartman is speaking about the whites when he suddenly challenges a participant to stop talking and pay attention. Of course, there is no one talking, but he loves to use it as an example of how each of the personalities reacts. The reds are thinking, “what do you care about who is talking? You’ve got the microphone; simply get on with your speech!” The blues are thinking, “Who was talking? That is terribly inappropriate. I wonder who it was.” The yellows are thinking, “I was talking, and he didn’t catch me!” But the whites are thinking, “I don’t like Dr. Hartman calling someone out like that in public. That was rude and unnecessary!” Remember, whites are kind people, and they place no value in seeing people mistreated. Which one were you, were you the red, blue, yellow or white?

Why is it that many people consider whites to be lazy? Getting up my white personality daughter in the morning is no easy task. She was in no hurry whatsoever. She handles life as it comes to her, on her terms. I’ve told her that she needs to accomplish her goals and not wait for them to come to her. I promise you she is in no way lazy.

Have you figured out if you know anyone that has this personality? Next week we will continue on the color white.

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (11)

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (11)

By Dr. Michael Brooks

This week, we will continue on the personality color of white. Have you noticed anyone in your family or at work that lives for peace and harmony? Let’s see.

I had a client of mine who’s wife had asked him to remove his books and files he placed on their pool table. They had been there for several months. She asked him over and over again to remove the mess off the pool table. One Saturday morning, she went into their home office and asked him one more time, “please remove your stuff off the pool table.”  He said he would get to it but was busy at the moment. A minute later, she walked into his office with a stack of books, magazines, file folders, raised them over her head, and slammed them on his office floor, and walked out of his office. He was stunned, shocked as his wife was a quiet, soft-spoken white. He sat there in disbelief and stared at the mess on the floor. Five minutes later, she walked back into his office and apologized for her behavior. That’s another thing whites will do, apologize for their actions, knowing it was wrong.

As my secondary color is white, I can tell you that whites, for the most part, hate being in leadership positions. I know I don’t like being out in front and leading things. I have overcome that fear and will do it from time to time. The hang-up with whites is we fear when in any leadership position, we’ll make the wrong decisions, so we avoid having any responsibilities. For the most part, whites don’t say much, but they’re always observing those around them. Whites listen well and remember things being said. If you talk negatively about someone they know and like, they will remember what you said and not forget; whites don’t like someone talking about others. They will avoid you because you have given them a reason not to trust you.

Whites don’t take life seriously; they meander through life as casual lost souls. Getting a white to do something can be draining, it can be hard sometimes. My one friend is never in a hurry; he will frustrate others who may be in a hurry. Whites can be very forgetful too. They may forget to bring lunch to work; they may fail to pick-up a friend for a movie or errands. A big one is that they fail to return phone calls.

Next week, we will continue on the whites in the colorcode, hopefully, you’re learning something about the peacemakers in your life!

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (10)

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (10)

By Dr. Michael Brooks

This week we will continue with the colorcode personality of white. Have you figured out which is your colorcode personality?

White personalities in the colorcode love peace; they are the peacemakers of all the colors. They are the diplomats and want everyone to work together peacefully. Whites don’t like petty arguments and will not get involved with or be pushed into one.

Whites can be very insecure and non-committal. One thing for sure, whites can be the hardest color to read, and you never know what they are feeling or thinking. For the most part, whites are really good-natured, and most people see that in them. Very few people will challenge or upset them because of their laid-back personalities. Whites struggle with their own self-doubt. Whites often question some of the decisions they make and are unwilling to confront others in the process. One is the issues that I have had in dealing with whites is that they are so passive, at times, you can walk all over them. How do I know this? My secondary color is white, and from past experiences, I have had people try to manipulate me. It used to drive me crazy when I allowed people to do this. More often than not, when we get dependant on someone, we seem to latch on to that person (relationship) or a business that we work at. Whites are very loyal to a fault. This can be to our detriment. Why? More often than not, when whites get into relationships, whites struggle with doing outside interests, they focus solely on that individual and miss opportunities of adding new and exciting interests.

There is something that all whites have in common, that they doubt themselves. They want acceptance and approval from the people in their lives and will often seek it in healthy and unhealthy ways. They seem to question their capabilities. The unhealthy white will seek attention and insist that people pay attention to them.

I know several white personalities in the colorcode who are incredibly patient. They don’t seem to get bothered by very much. They are tolerant of others. They can be waiting for a friend that’s late and, while waiting, will find something to do without getting upset. While others (the reds, blues and yellow personalities) will get upset, be angry, and let you know how upset they are. Whites don’t miss a thing; they are very observant. After looking at all sides of the story, that’s when they will let you know what they think. I had a client that was white in colorcode that never got upset, if the world around her was collapsing, she was not worrying about the little things in life. I do remember though, one time someone was pushing their agenda on her; it didn’t go well for that person. She was very deliberate in the way she talked with them, firm, and didn’t back down. Put a white in the corner, and they will come out fighting. They may seem passive, but they do have their boundaries.

Next week, we will continue this article on the white personality and how to enjoy this person in the colorcode. How many white personality characters do you have in your life?

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (9)

Unexplained Behaviors Explained? (9)

By Dr. Michael Brooks

Today, we will look at the colorcode personality profile, and out of the four colors, red, blue, yellow, we’ll look at the personality color of white, their mantra is (Peace, all I want is peace). We all know people who avoid arguments at all costs. They rather walk away than fight. Have you ever noticed that some people don’t say very much? They seem to be on the sidelines, watching and observing the actions of others. I call these people the (VOR) Voice Of Reason; they think before they say anything.

This colorcode personality is very much in tune with themselves, simply they love peace in their lives. They love being by themselves and are content being alone. My secondary color is white in the colorcode. Growing up, I didn’t like to argue and avoided fighting with my brothers and sister. I didn’t like it when they were fighting each other. I’d leave the room or go outside or go to my bedroom. Conflict always has been hard for me, even as an adult. I can remember when growing up, if I was sent to my room as a punishment, I considered that a piece of heaven. I had my books on science, history and would read until my parents thought it was time to come out of my room. Time alone to me was healing time, my personal time, and most people who are the white personalities would agree with that.

One of the things you should know about this personality is that they resent being imposed upon, nor will they impose upon others. It’s not in their DNA. When all hell breaks loose, the one person you want in your corner is the white personality. They will bring calmness and comfort to you or those around you. I will often get phone calls when a crisis happens; my nickname is VOR-Voice Of Reason. I will bring peace to a crisis. That’s my job as well and a passion of mine. I love what I do.

Here are some of the pros and cons of having a white personality in the colorcode. The white characteristics are easy to spot once you learn all the other colorcode characters’ traits. Some of the characteristics in the whites are strengths we all admire, and some not so much. Let’s take a look and see what our friends, the whites, bring to the table.

Next week, I will continue with the pros and cons of the white colorcode personality.
